• GCS was established in 1966 with the aim of social support for cancer patients and their families.

• In 1985, The hospital was founded to provide an integrated diagnostic and therapeutic service for cancer patients in the Central Delta region to overcome the hardship of traveling to Cairo for patients and their families to receive radiation therapy. The Governor of Gharbia at that time allocated a limited area of 400m2 (four hundred square meters) to build the Gharbia Cancer Society Hospital and the Radiotherapy Unit was established to be the first unit of its kind in the Delta region.

• The main objective of the society at that time was to provide services that are not available in nearby government institutions.

• The construction of the Gharbia Cancer society building began in 1989 on a ground floor + 5 upper floors.

• The radiation therapy department started to receive patients in 1993. It was equipped with a linear accelerator for radiotherapy and a planning system. In 1999, a simulator was purchased for accurate planning of radiotherapy.

• In the following years, a Sonar device was purchased for various body examinations, colored doppler for veins and arteries, taking guided biopsies from the thyroid gland - breast - liver - cervix - prostate, and a mammography device for the early detection of breast cancer. And a diagnostic X-ray device was also purchased. All equipment were provided by public donations.

• The Clinical Pathology laboratory was also provided with the latest automatic devices to perform all the blood chemistry analysis, tumor markers.


• The Medical Oncology Department in Gharbia Cancer Society started in 2001 under supervision of a team of Oncology professors.


• In 2001, a Gamma camera device was installed at the Radio-diagnosis department to preform Bone Scan and Thyroid scan.

• In 2005, Surgical Oncology department was established including 3 operation rooms. With the addition of surgery, the hospital became a comprehensive center for cancer patients that offers all the services from diagnosis, surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy following the latest medical guidelines. The department also has the latest sterilization unit for surgical instruments including ultrasonic washing, acid washing, thermal drying, sterilization, and packaging.

• In 2008, the Society purchased a new linear accelerated device for the radiation oncology department. The new linear accelerator was provided with the 3D conformal radiation therapy technique. A CT-Simulator was also installed for accurate planning of radiation therapy.

• In 2013, Another Linear accelerator was purchased with Intensity-modulated radiation therapy IMRT updates.

• In 2016, a new Echocardiography device was purchased for the follow up of patients receiving chemotherapy. Also, a Frozen Section device was also purchased to analyze tumor samples accurately during surgeries.

• GCS also has a unit for early detection of cancer. The clinical examination, blood tests, and the radiological imaging including mammography are all free of charge. The GCS also conduct regular seminars to the public and provides flyers and booklets to raise the awareness about cancer and early detection.

• To alleviate the suffering of cancer patients and their families, the GCS started a palliative care program on 2011 that provides psychological, medical, and spiritual care for the patients and their families This department is one of the first palliative care program in Egypt with 6 days per week outpatient clinic and 12 beds inpatient unit.

• In 2019, a 6 floors Guest House was added to the GCS. This guest house offers free accommodation to cancer patients that come from the nearby governorates to receive treatment in our hospital.

• Recently, in 2025, Treatment with Radio-active Iodine was added to the services that GCS provides.
